New Years Day Walk with a Warden

Burn off some of those festive calories with a birdwatching walk around our shortest circular route – taking in three bird watching hides, saltmarsh and the beach.

A Winter Ramble around Pett Level

With reedbeds, grassland and wetlands to explore, Pett Pools and Pett Level are a perfect location for birdwatching. Join our warden Chris, along with local bird watcher Phil Jones, to explore this rich area looking for wildfowl, waders and birds of prey. Bring a packed lunch and binoculars if you have them.

World Wetlands Day Walk 1

Rye Harbour Nature Reserve is a Ramsar International wetland site and today is World Wetlands Day. This circular walk will visit the birdwatching hide overlooking Castle Water where we should see Waders, Egrets, Ducks, Marsh Harrier and, if we are very lucky, a Bittern. We will also have a quick look inside Camber Castle. Bring a packed lunch.

World Wetlands Day Walk 2

An evening short walk around our saltmarsh looking at wetland birds as they feed and roost on the nature reserve. Visiting a couple of our birdwatching hides.

Thursday 6 February 3 to 5pm

Winter Owls at Rye Harbour

This is a great time of year to observe owls on the hunt. We'll look to try and observe this magnificent avian predator, whilst learning more about their captivating lives. Our afternoon walk of approximately 4km should also give the opportunity to observe a multitude of wading birds as they congregate to roost. Binoculars are recommended, though we will have a few pairs available on the day.

Wildlife Rangers

Become a Wildlife Ranger and join other teenagers taking action to protect and learn about local wildlife, bushcraft skills and much more. Identify and learn about wildlife, carry out practical conservation tasks to improve habitats, survey and monitor plants and animals, country crafts and nature photography.

Suitable for ages 12-16. Parents do not accompany.

Beginning Birdwatching in Winter

Flummoxed by Finches? Baffled by Buntings? Stumped by Sandpipers? If you need assistance with your Avocets or help with your Herons, this is the event for you. Join us for a circular walk of approximately 3km as we visit a few of the hides to get excellent views of seabirds, ducks and a whole lot more. Binoculars are recommended, though we will have a few pairs available on the day as well as some field guides.

Strandline Stroll

Wrap up warm for a stroll along the beach when winter’s stormy seas may have brought in many interesting things to find. We will also clean up any litter as we go.

Brilliant Birds

It’s National Nestbox Week, why not drop-in to the reserve to see how you can help your garden birds. There will be advice on choosing or making a nestbox and a chance to have a go at making your own bird feeders to take home.

Join one of our experienced wardens to spot some winter birds around the beach reserve. We should see Curlew, Lapwing, Redshank, Golden Plover, Wigeon, Teal, Shoveler and Little Egret.

Nature Tots

Bring your little ones for mornings of fun at the nature reserve and on the beach and help them explore the natural world with stories, games and hands-on outdoor activities such as minibeast hunting, birdwatching, rockpooling and beachcombing.

Weekly sessions from 10am to 12noon are themed around wildlife and the changing seasons. Suitable for children aged 2-4 years.

All children must be accompanied by an adult. Online booking is essential, in blocks of 4-7 sessions in line with the school terms.

Nature Babies

Introduce your baby to the great outdoors with our new nature-based baby group. Lots of sensory experiences for little ones, singing and stories, plus a stroll around the reserve (bring buggies or carriers) and a chance to meet other families.

Weekly sessions from 1 to 2pm are themed around wildlife and the changing seasons. Suitable for babies aged 3 months–18 months.

All children must be accompanied by an adult. Online booking is essential in blocks of 4 sessions in line with school terms.

Wildlife Watch

Monthly club for children aged 5-11 offering a chance to find out more about the natural world and the special wildlife we find at Rye Harbour Nature Reserve. Each session will have a different theme and will include exploring the reserve, playing games, craft activities and learning how to help wildlife thrive. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Saltmarsh Birds

A two mile circular walk around the saltmarsh re-creation project looking for seals and birds including Mediterranean gulls and Avocets at the start of their breeding season. Bring binoculars, but we also have pairs to loan.

50th Anniversary Walk

A 9 km / 5 mile walk to celebrate the nature reserve’s big birthday! Today marks 50 years since the first warden started work at Rye Harbour Local Nature Reserve and to celebrate we’ll be walking around the whole reserve, stopping for refreshments in the Halpin hide at Castle Water bring a packed lunch. Tea, coffee and cake at the end of the walk – see below.

Castle Water Wildlife Walk

Join James Duncan for a circular walk of approximately 6km, through reedbeds and across the sheep fields to Camber Castle and returning along the river Brede. There will be an opportunity to explore the bird hides and wildlife of Castle Water and Rye Harbour Nature Reserve before having a look inside the 16th century fortification.
