‘Love a Plover’ this Christmas and adopt a bird at Rye Harbour Nature Reserve (RHNR) at the Rye Christmas Festival (8/12/18).
Look out for the Sussex Wildlife Trust marquee opposite Rye Library at the Festival, on Saturday 8 December, 10.30am-6pm, where, as well as the Adopt-a-Bird pack, there will be a competition to enter (£1 per entry), with prizes including a night at The Whitehouse Hotel, Rye and paddle boarding at Rye Watersports - all in support of the new Rye Harbour Discovery Centre.
The building of the new Discovery Centre is joint project between Sussex Wildlife Trust and The Friends of Rye Harbour Nature Reserve, and will provide a dynamic new exhibition space with wildlife garden and café designed to provide a host of new ways visitors can enjoy, relax in and explore the 1100 acre Nature Reserve. The Discovery Centre will also provide vital facilities and equipment for schools and volunteers to learn about, and help look after the rare and endangered plants, birds and animals that thrive here.
In the last two weeks over 2,000 golden plovers have arrived at the reserve from Scandinavia. Dr Barry Yates, Manager of RHNR explained, ‘We are expecting a further thousand birds to arrive in the next few weeks. It is likely they will spend the winter with us unless we get freezing weather which may result in them moving to France or Spain seeking warmer climes.
‘This is the perfect time to visit the reserve and watch the flock from one of our bird hides - they make an impressive sight when being chased by a peregrine falcon.’
The Adopt-a-Bird pack includes a ‘Love-a-Plover’ T-shirt, a golden plover fact sheet and stickers and an adoption certificate signed by Dr Yates, presented as a Christmas gift inside a beautiful cotton reusable Rye Harbour Nature Reserve bag.
